The Red Wagon Story
With a passion for revitalizing Downtown Weldon, Andy Whitby began investing in local buildings in 2001.
After years of setbacks—including an empty department store during the Great Recession—he refused to give up.
In 2015, he launched what he called The Lemonade Project—turning a struggling property into an opportunity.
By 2017, a vendor market was born.
By 2022, it had a new name—Red Wagon—inspired by nostalgia, community, and new beginnings.
Today, Red Wagon is more than a market.
It’s a launching pad for small businesses and a driving force in Downtown Weldon’s revival.

Our goal is to have so many red wagons that we can claim to have the Largest Collection of Red Wagons. Who knows, it may become the world's largest.
Yeah, it’s that crazy. But according to Google and ChatGPT, no one has an established large collection of red wagons. So we accept the challenge.
This has come about because we recently attended a workshop on how to create our business into a destination. We’re working through the 7 requirements to qualify.
This goal of creating a large collection of red wagons will meet two of the requirements.
Creating a Unique Positioning Statement that describes what makes our business distinct from other businesses like ours.
And creating a monument within our business, something customers will find interesting, would be willing to visit from far-away places to see it, and people will find it interesting enough that they will want to take photos of it.
Once qualified, Red Wagon will be designated as a Certified North Carolina Destination Business.
What to help? Do you have a red wagon and would like for it to become apart of this monumental effort? Wagons that are donated will be labeled with the donor, the wagon's age, and any memory or story you would like to share.
